Running Economy in Hyrox: How Your Footwear Affects Your 8 km

Hyrox running economy with barefoot zero drop shoes - The Nude Foot training performance

In Hyrox, the run doesn't decide the race. But it decides who arrives at each station with something left in the tank — and who's already in survival mode before the ski erg. Most athletes practise the work stations obsessively. And then race 8 km between each in footwear they've never really thought about. That oversight is costing them minutes.

What Running Economy Actually Means

Running economy is the measure of how much energy you consume to run at a given pace. In Hyrox, it doesn't just affect your run times. It affects how depleted you are when you arrive at the ski erg, how much power you have left for the sled, how your grip holds up on the farmers carry. Everything downstream of the run depends on how economically you ran it.

Foot Strike and Why It Matters

Research is consistent: heel strikers have significantly higher impact loads than midfoot or forefoot strikers. Each heel strike generates a rapid force spike — a braking force that momentarily arrests forward momentum. Over 8 km you take roughly 7,000-8,000 steps. Midfoot striking allows the ankle and Achilles tendon to act as a natural spring, storing and returning energy in the push-off. Here's where footwear becomes critical: elevated heel drop encourages heel striking. Zero drop makes midfoot striking the path of least resistance.

Practical Changes for Your Hyrox Training

Incorporate barefoot strides during warm-ups — 4-6 strides of 60-80 metres focusing on landing under your centre of mass. Increase cadence toward 170-180 steps per minute. Practise station-to-run transitions specifically. Build barefoot run volume progressively, adding 500m per week.
