Barefoot, posture, and jaw health: applied science to human movement
For years, we’ve been led to believe that the mouth and the feet are completely independent systems.
A dentist looks at teeth.
A podiatrist looks at feet.
A physio looks at posture.
But the body doesn’t work in departments: it works as an integrated unit, supported by muscular chains, fascia, postural reflexes, and anatomical relationships that literally connect the sole of the foot to the position of the jaw.
And this is where footwear comes in.
What you put on your feet can improve—or destroy—your posture… and, surprisingly, your jaw health as well.
Let’s start from the ground up.
1. The feet: the body’s neuromechanical foundation
Your feet are not simple supports. They are:
-
Proprioceptive sensors
-
Dynamic stabilizers
-
Natural shock absorbers
-
Postural pillars
-
The source of hundreds of neuromuscular adjustments every second
When you wear footwear that restricts the natural movement of the foot, you block the information the feet send to the nervous system to organize posture.
A rigid foot = a rigid body.
A disconnected foot = a misaligned body.
Barefoot footwear does the opposite:
it restores the foot’s natural function so the entire musculoskeletal chain can work as it was designed to.
2. From the feet to the jaw: the ascending muscular chain
Human posture is a continuous chain:
feet → ankles → knees → pelvis → spine → cervical spine → skull → jaw
Each link influences the next.
✔ If the foot collapses inward (excessive pronation)…
The tibia rotates → the knee loses alignment → the hip compensates → the pelvis rotates → the spine adapts → the head changes position.
✔ If the heel is elevated (heels, maximalist running shoes)…
The spine’s natural curves are altered, creating compensations in the cervical region and changes in the mandibular plane.
✔ If the foot is compressed (narrow toe box)…
Reduced activation of the intrinsic foot muscles decreases global stability → the skull has to “search for balance” → muscular tensions are modified all the way up to the TMJ (temporomandibular joint).
The jaw always follows posture.
And posture always starts at the feet.
3. Why conventional footwear distorts your biomechanics
Most modern footwear has features that are biomechanically disastrous:
-
Thick soles → cut off proprioception
-
Elevated heels → shift the center of gravity
-
Narrow toe boxes → deform the base and alter support
-
Excessive cushioning → tricks the nervous system
-
Stiffness → prevents natural foot mobility
This doesn’t just affect how you walk.
It affects how you stand, how you move… and how you position your jaw.
4. The TMJ (jaw) depends on cervical posture
The temporomandibular joint is one of the most sensitive joints in the body. Its position is directly influenced by:
-
Head tilt
-
Sternocleidomastoid tension
-
Suboccipital musculature
-
Cervical spine position
-
Muscular balance of the face and neck
When posture is disrupted:
-
Bruxism increases
-
Chewing muscles become overloaded
-
Neck pain appears
-
The jaw loses its neutral position
-
Chronic headaches emerge
-
Breathing changes (more mouth breathing, less nasal breathing)
And many times, it all starts… at the feet.

5. How barefoot reorganizes your posture from the ground up
A free foot can:
✔ Activate intrinsic foot muscles
Improving stability and weight distribution.
✔ Increase proprioception
More information to the nervous system = better posture.
✔ Facilitate a more stable gait
The base aligns → the rest of the body follows.
✔ Reduce cervical tension
A more centered head means less stress on the TMJ.
✔ Promote a more neutral jaw pattern
Less tension → less bruxism → more efficient function.
That’s why when someone switches to barefoot footwear, they don’t just notice improvements in their feet… but also in their posture, their breathing, and yes, their jaw.
6. Why The Nude Foot fits into all of this
The Nude Foot was born because the barefoot market had two problems:
-
either the models were too “ugly” for everyday wear,
-
or they lacked real functional rigor.
So we decided to create the first functional and stylish barefoot shoe, with:
-
a truly wide toe box
-
a thin sole that respects sensory feedback
-
total flexibility
-
natural (not artificial) support
-
an aesthetic that fits real life
-
made in Spain with traditional craftsmanship
Designed to be truly barefoot.
Designed to be barefoot all day, not just for training.
Because posture isn’t corrected in short bursts: it’s corrected through consistency.

Conclusion: your jaw isn’t isolated. It’s connected to your feet.
When your feet return to functioning like feet:
your posture improves, your breathing improves, your stability improves… and your jaw finds its natural alignment.
Moving the way you were designed starts at your foundation.
The Nude Foot makes that foundation human again.
